In the author intro/forward, Brooks claims that he was inspired by Walter Scott and Dumas to write his own adventure. In reality, he was not only inspired by, but reworked the Lord of the Rings into a condensed, one-book knock-off that bears all the outward forms of that superior book, but lacks all the soul. It is as if you gave Lord of the Rings to a computer, and told the computer to produce something similar.The characters not only copy Tolkien's but they are one-dimensional. I don't care about any of them. I care about Balinor insofar as he is Aragorn, but I do not care about Balinor. I'm just reminded of the Lord of the Rings, the entire time, without fail.I suppose I am the audience who cannot get past this. It's not just the beginning, it's not just the middle. Literally the whole story, as you keep going, is Lord of the Rings. I will see flashes of originality, and then he pulls me back in.I believe that this is fan fiction-tier. I am surprised that Brooks did not face lawsuits for what he did. These are the first three Shannara series gems that Terry Brooks wrote. I first read them more than 40 years ago. I've periodically reread the hardcopies over the years, but the originals have gotten rather worn and I decided that I'd buy the Kindle version. I love these stories and as far as I can tell, the Kindle version is the same as the originals. The only difference is that the original hardcopies had some sketches that aren't in the kindle trilogy. I did like the sketches, but the electronic version is very convenient and I can still look at the sketches in my old copies.Terry Brooks is my favorite living author. If you read and enjoy the trilogy you'll probably be hooked on the entire series.One word of warning. These stories are very different from the TV series. I like the TV series too, but the stories are entirely different. The personality of the characters sometimes share the same name but little else.Some very important book characters are missing entirely from the series and vice versa. I very much prefer the stories in the book, but like I indicated, the TV series is good too.
